My Self-Publishing Adventure, Day *Headbash*

H’okay. So…

I ordered the proof, THEN saw a preview of my cover on CreateSpace:

Hear that? That is my head exploding. Pretty sound, I know. Kind of like the screeching of a banzai kamikaze monkey right before it crashes into its rival’s bananna tree.

Or… something. I don’t even know what I’m SAYING anymore.

So, yeah. THAT is what I have to look forward to in my mailbox in a week. ._. To say I’m unimpressed would be the understatement of the century. The good news is, now that they’ve shipped it, I was able to do a few fixes (aka fixes that took four hours in Photoshop), and re-submit. Here’s the new cover:

Which I assume will look somewhat like this when they crop it for the front alone (based on what they did above):

At least, that’s what I hope anyway. I can’t know for sure at the moment. See, I have found that CreateSpace has a very annoying habit of not giving a writer a very good indication of what their cover will look like until you to order the proof, THEN they show it to you. Now, I’m willing to admit that I might simply not have seen it before the ordering processes, but I can say that the preview came up on my screen pretty much right after I ordered. It’s as if they do this on purpose so you have to order more than one proof.

So now I have to wait another 48 hours for them to approve THIS cover, then I can order a proof again. Except I have no money right now. And I still have the junk I paid for before coming in the mail in a week.

._. <— See that? That’s me. Cute, ain’t I? But. Not. Impressed.

We shall see how this plays out. Also, I sent the manuscript to a small press. That too.

  1. The proportions look a little off…. especially Guts’ head, but I suppose that’s to be expected, since it doesn’t get cropped, it gets “fitted.” I look forward to seeing what it looks like when it’s done 🙂

  2. Yeah, I thought so too. The issue they had was that our names were too low and they didn’t want them to be cropped, so I had to border it up quite a bit to make that happen, which including squishing the original image. But overall it looks much better than the original crop, and I’m much happier. Of course, it’ll also be a lot bigger in real life. 🙂
